The Corps of Engineers, which has a 4-year plan using USDA's "Wildlife
Services" sharpshooters, would rather kill seabirds than address the
destruction of salmon spawning habitat caused by its dams on the
Columbia River. Scapegoating seabirds is cheaper and quicker than
tackling root causes like habitat destruction and overfishing.
I can't help myself: I've started a short film entitled "Cormorants in
the Crosshairs" to try to help stop this slaughter before next year's
breeding season begins. We know East Sand Island: we camped there and
filmed the "Coney Island" shots for the pelican movie (17,000 pelicans
on the beach). It's a completely pro bono project that will be
